The Battle of Themopaylae – A1 poster

About this design

This scene depicts the death of the Spartan King Leonidas and the last stand of the Spartans on Kolonos Hill where the last of the Spartans met there end.Although Sparta was self-interested in this war and fought the Persians at Thermopylae because it was the best place to halt the Persian army.  Their death and sacrifice allowed the Greek army to regroup and eventually defeat the Persians.  This in turn allowed for Athenian democracy to flourish 100 years later. This painting is dedicated to my Grandfather Major Eric Tyrrell who fought a rearguard action in this location and in southern Greece in World war 2 holding of the Germans for long enough to escape to Crete.  Eric and his men were left behind then purchased a Greek fishing boat to escape but was strafed by a Stuka of the coast losing 20 of his 30 men before being taken prisoner for the remainder of the war.

In memory of all those who died at Thermopylae so others lived
